CHOW is a lobbying organisation formed by a group of
individuals who regularly exercise their dogs in the grounds of Chiswick
House. The group was formed in late 2006 in response to the proposals
outlined by the Chiswick House and Gardens Trust in their bid to obtain
Heritage Lottery funding for the redevelopment and restoration of the
House and Gardens.
The original proposals included restrictions on the use of the gardens by dog walkers, including severe access restrictions and the imposition of 'on lead' areas throughout much of the grounds.
In March 2007, CHOW organised a well-attended public meeting in order to obtain a mandate to represent local dog walkers, to ascertain their support for a voluntary code of conduct for dog walking and to ensure that this code was included in any management plan and the submission to the HLF.
Following a subsequent joint meeting between CHOW, CHG Trustees and Management, the CHG Project Team supported this initiative and the Project Board has now approved the Code for Dog walking in Chiswick House Gardens and agreed the Protocol for Dog Walkers.
CHOW continues to monitor the situation and we have been assured by the CHG Trustees who attended the joint meeting that CHOW will be consulted on any future changes potentially affecting the agreement we now have.
We should like to thank all those who supported this campaign either by attending the public meeting, completing a petition or publicly voicing their support which has enabled us all, and our dogs, to continue enjoying the benefits of Chiswick House Gardens.
